Are you looking for the best VyprVPN review in 2021?

VyprVPN has been around for a while but many vpn users have shied away from this vpn provider because of its logging policies for years.

However, VyprVPN overhauled its privacy policy in 2018 and changed their not so pleasant attitude towards torrenting…

But is VyprVPN any good for complete internet privacy?

In this VyprVPN review in 2021 we are going to review VyprVPN pros and cons.

Before we get into the detailed VyprVPN review, here is a quick summary of what I found about VyprVPN.

VyprVPN is a vpn company based in Switzerland, owned by Golden Frog.

It enables you (now) to browse the internet anonymously, unblock Netflix in the US, iPlayer in the UK and download torrents.

I also found the VyprVPN connections speeds to be very okay, but not the best, closely comparing with HMA and PureVPN.

Let’s now take a more indepth review of VyprVPN and see what all this means for an average vpn user.

How many servers does VyprVPN have?

To begin this 2021 VyprVPN review, let’s see how many servers VyprVPN has.

The more servers a vpn has the better the services they should deliver… or at least I think so.

While writing this review of VyprVPN, I found out that they have 700+ servers based in 70+ different countries.

I also discovered that these servers are fairly distributed across contents.

Unlike PIA, which has most of its servers in Europe and North American, VyprVPN also has servers in Africa, Asia and a good number of South American countries.

I was rather surprised at how well they were able to fairly distribute these servers considering they have a rather small collection of servers.

In fact, with a server count of under 1,000 I consider VyprVPN a rather small vpn company.

What is interesting is that these server numbers are not inflated with virtual servers… like most vpns do.

VyprVPN actually keep their own physical servers in these countries.

This means they have more control of these servers and are able to optimize them for faster speeds… just as we are about to discover in the speed tests below.

So contrary to the belief that the more servers you have the faster your connection speeds will be, this VyprVPN review is about to prove the opposite.

Let’s now see how these servers actually perform.

Does VyprVPN unblock Netflix?

Online video streaming is a huge business today.

Some might say it has completely replaced the good ol’ cable tv that has been in existence for decades.

However, this has also come with its challenges.

Even though they have the best collections of tv shows, most online streaming platforms restrict access to tv shows to certain geographical regions.

So if you are outside the US for example, you can’t access shows destined for the US audience.

The only way is to try and use a vpn to make you look like you are in the USA in order to be able to access this content.

Even so, these platforms have become smarter and are able to detect these vpn IPs and block their access to geo restricted content.

It takes a powerful vpn to unblock most streaming websites.

How did VyprVPN fare with my streaming tests?

I was able to unblock Netflix in the US and watch my favorite shows without any proxy servers errors using VyprVPN.

Using the US based servers, I was also able to unblock Hulu and Amazon Prime Video.

Unfortunately, when I tried to watch Netflix with a Canada based server I was blocked. I also couldn’t unblock Netflix with UK and German servers.

On the flip side, using UK based servers I was able to unblock BBC iPlayer, iTV and Eurosport flawlessly.

The Canadian and German servers also let me watch a number of country specific streaming channels.

Back to Netflix.

Netflix US has the most collection of shows so most people would be satisfied with unblocking Netflix US.

In that case therefore VyprVPN would be a great vpn for Netflix US  for you.

However, if you want a vpn that can unblock Netflix in other countries too, then I don’t recommend VyprVPN for you.

I’m putting together a list of the best vpns for Netflix. I’ll come back and update the link once the article is complete.

It’s also amazing that VyprVPN is able to unlock other streaming sites like iPlayer.

How about speed?

Is VyprVPN fast enough?

Speed is a very critical factor when choosing a vpn to buy.

In fact, this is what distinguishes powerful vpns from the crappy scammy folks online who claim to be the fastest when you cant even stream HD YouTube videos.

To begin with, it’s a rather acceptable fact across the board that for some reason, all vpns will slow you down to some extent.

So the question is not whether VyprVPN will slow you down, but to what extent?

While some vpns maintain a higher percentage of your original internet speed, some bring your speed to a screeching halt that even your normal browsing is affected.

So how did VyprVPN fare in my speed tests?

I tested VyprVPN connection speed by connecting to three of its servers based inthe USA, UK and Hong Kong using speedtest.net.

Before connecting to VyprVPN, I had 25.61Mbps download and 3.45Mbps upload speeds.

When I connected to a VyprVPN server based in the USA, my speeds dropped to 20.91Mbps download and my upload speed increased to 3.88Mbps.

On the UK based server, my download speeds dropped further to 18.05Mbps and 3.00Mbps for uploads.

The Hong Kong server download speeds were bearable though.

Download speeds only dropped to 21.90Mbps while the upload speeds dropped further to 2.58Mbps.

While both the USA and Hong Kong servers were able to keep more than 80% of my original connection speeds, the UK server performed below average… speed dropped to 70%.

Overall, the VyprVPN connection speeds, while being okay, are not the best if you are really concerned about speed.

From these results, I would not rate VyprVPN as one of the fastest vpns available.

Does VyprVPN allow torrenting?

Will you be able to download torrent files with VyprVPN?

Does VyprVPN allow P2P file sharing and torrenting…

This is an area that VyprVPN was very unfriendly about and strongly discouraged torrenting in their terms of service.

In fact, there were users who tried to download torrent files using VyprVPN and received ToS violation warnings from VyprVPN support.

So are things any better now? What has improved?

First, let me confirm in this review that VyprVPN allows torrenting because I was able to download torrent files successfully at rather great speeds.

Secondly, if you check out VyprVPN updated privacy policy and ToS, they clearly state that they support P2P file sharing and torrenting on their servers.

They even go ahead to mention that torrent clients like BitTorrent are supported.

Clearly, they’ve made a u-turn in terms of their attitude towards torrenting and P2P file sharing.

Couple this with the fact that they don’t collect any user logs anymore, as we’ll see below, and your torrenting is completely anonymous.

If you are looking for a vpn that will allow you to torrent anonymously, then I strongly recommend VyprVPN.

Though VyprVPN is a vpn I would NEVER recommend 2 years ago for torrenting, it is one of the best vpns for torrenting available in 2021.

Does VyprVPN keep user logs?

So what is VyprVPN user logs policy, really?

This 2021 VyprVPN review could not be complete without talking about VyprVPN no logs policy because it’s one of the main things that made this vpn a rather controversial player in the vpn industry.

In fact, I think it’s for this reason that even though VyprVPN offers great speeds, it was slow in picking up users.

First let’s look at privacy in terms of the location and jurisdiction of VyprVPN.

VyprVPN is a vpn company owned by Golden From and based in Switzerland.

Switzerland does not form part of the 5/9/14 eyes countries that surveille and spy on their citizens and then share this information among themselves.

So it is a privacy haven and you should have nothing to worry about, right?

Not so fast.

Even though Switzerland does not form part of these 5/9/14 eyes countries, they have their own data retentions laws and internet privacy laws too that might compromise your identity.

So the only way to complete privacy in Switzerland is keep zero logs.

Initially, VyprVPN collected and kept logs of your real IP address, server connection timestamps and bandwidth usage.

Technically, this is enough information to identify who you are and what you do.

The main reason people hop onto the vpn bandwagon is for anonymity… so that nobody knows who you are on the internet and what they access.

This VyprVPN privacy policy freaked out many vpn users because, if compelled VyprVPN  would easily hand over information that could identify you.

Luckily, after listening to customer complaints VyprVPN overhauled their privacy policy in late 2018.

At the time I was writing this VyprVPN review in 2021, I can confirm that VyprVPN has updated their privacy policy and they DO NOT collect any identifiable user logs.

What does this mean?

It means they don’t collect your IP address, connection timestamps or bandwidth usage anymore.

Yeah… that’s what they say in the privacy policy but how do you really know they don’t log your IP anymore, huh?

Well, VyprVPN contracted a third party security company called Leviathan Security to conduct an audit of their servers.

They had access to the servers and the source code to unearth anything that could compromise user identify on VyprVPN servers.

Leviathan Security reported that VyprVPN actually does not keep any user logs.

That’s good news… and that’s how I know VyprVPN does not keep logs anymore and is completely safe to use.

So if you are looking for a vpn service that is true to their word about no logs, I strongly recommend VyprVPN.

What encryption does VyprVPN use?

When it comes to securely transmitting data online, your encryption algorithm is key.

Most vpns opt for the most secure encryption algorithms out there.

Encryption that has been tested and proven to be tamper proof… encryption that is used by the most security conscious organizations like NSA, FBI and CIA.

It’s called 256-bit encryption… and this is the encryption that VyprVPN uses.

Apart from this encryption, VyprVPN employs the use of some of the best vpn connection protocols for additional security.

Currently, VyprVPN supports OpenVPN, L2TP, PPTP, IPSec protocols and their own ChameleonTM protocol.

The ChameleonTM protocol is particularly excellent for server obfuscation when accessing the internet from restricted countries like Russia and China.

Even though VyprVPN  supports it, protocols like PPTP are dated and insecure and should not be used.

Another interesting thing is that you always have an option to change which protocol you want to use in the VyprVPN apps.

Overall, all your personal data transmitted over VyprVPN is secure and cannot be decrypted by a hacker.

Does VyprVPN an ad blocker?

An ad blocker will enable you to disable ads from running on your machine.

This is especially important for autoplay video ads that start to play either at the bottom right or bottom left corner of your screen.

Being able to disable these ads would be great…

Unfortunately, VyprVPN does not have an ad blocker that I know of… this feature is surprisingly missing from all the apps.

You might say this is a VyprVPN pro since some sites block you when they detect you are blocking their ads… it’s a compromise some might not be willing to make.

If you are looking for a vpn with an ad blocker like that in PIA, then I don’t recommend VyprVPN.

But since some people don’t usually turn on this feature anyway, the lack of an ad blocker might not be a problem… depending on your case.

Does VyprVPN have a malware blocker?

The internet is full of malware… or malicious software for that matter.

Ranging from phishing websites to DDoS attacks powered by botnets and zombie drones.

The purpose of a malware blocker is to block these websites from infecting your device and causing you harm.

Fortunately, VyprVPN provides a powerful malware blocker based on its NAT firewall.

Because this firewall has a database of over 1 million websites that are infected by malware, once turned on it will counter check every website you visit against this database.

Once it detects a malicious website, it will block the website before it causes you harm.

Additionally, this malware blocker is also able to stop a botnet from exploiting your device even if it’s already been infected.

So, yes, VyprVPN has a malware blocker and I recommend it if you want a vpn to prevent your computer from being used in a DDoS attack.

Does VyprVPN have dedicated IPs?

Do you get dedicated IP addresses with VyprVPN?

You would need a dedicated IP that you can whitelist, in say your banking app, so that you are not locked out for using a strange IP address.

Once you have a dedicated IP you can access the internet using the same IP.

However, VyprVPN does not support dedicated IPs at the time I wrote this VyprVPN review.

Since VyprVPN is constantly improving their services and offerings, I will provide an update as soon as they add this feature to their offerings.

Remember most vpns sell dedicated IPs as an additional plan you have to buy.

Unlike NordVPN that offers free dedicated IPs, be ready to part with more money to get this from other vpns like TorGuard.

Does VyprVPN have a kill switch?

Your internet connection drops several times a day.

However it usually reestablishes automatically, usually within a few seconds, so you don’t even realize it.

While this might sound good, it ain’t great for your security online… why?

Because your internet access is only secure as long as you remain connected to the vpn servers.

Anytime your connection drops and your vpn app disconnects, your real IP is exposed and your internet usage becomes transparent to your ISP.

If you want to stay safe at all times and only access the internet through a vpn, you’ll find VyprVPN internet kill switch very useful.

VyprVPN has an automatic kill switch that will block your internet access anytime your connection drops.

Once you turn on this feature in the settings, it’ll ensure that all your internet access is only through a vpn for security.

So, yes, VyprVPN has a kill switch for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS apps.

Does VyprVPN have split tunneling?

While an internet kill switch is great, there are times when you want certain apps to be exempted from a vpn.

Could be your banking app because of IP issues or your automatic backup software for speed issues.

It is at this moment where you need split tunneling feature.

Especially if a vpn does not provide a dedicated IP that you could whitelist.

Unfortunately, at the time I was writing this VyprVPN review, I couldn’t find any split tunnelling feature in the app settings.

So, no, VyprVPN does not support split tunneling.

IPv6 leaks, DNS leaks and WebRTC leaks tests

WebRTC is a technology that is used by most VoIP applications like Zoom when making video calls through the web.

These applications can see your real IP address because they leverage powerful HTML5 technology that can detect your actual location and IP.

In order to test whether VyprVPN leaks my IP while connected to their servers, I used ipleak.net.

From the screenshot above, my WebRTC address was not leaked while online.

Both IPv6 address and DNS queries were also not leaked because my DNS requests were not channelled through my ISP.

Is VyprVPN compatible with Tor?

The Tor browser is popularly used by privacy enthusiasts for maintaining anonymity online.

By using a Tor browser with a vpn, you become 100% anonymous because the vpn hides your IP address which is usually visible to the entry node to the Tor network.

So it would be great if your favorite vpn works with Tor so that you can take anonymity to the next level.

Unfortunately, VyprVPN does not support the Tor browser.

So if you are particularly looking for a browser that would work with Tor, then I don’t recommend you buy VyprVPN.

I’m putting up a list of all the vpns that work with Tor… once the list is complete I’ll come back and update the link.

Additional security features

As an additional security feature, VyprVPN has a setting for automatically connecting to a vpn when an untrusted wifi is detected.

This is especially important when you connect to a coffee shop wifi.

It’s good to leave this setting on so that it immediately connects to a vpn because these wifi networks are often easy targets for hackers through packet sniffing tools.

Will VyprVPN work in China?

Successful server obfuscation is an area most vpns struggle with.

In some countries like Russia, China and UAE internet access is heavily censored.

So it becomes impossible to access certain websites like Facebook, Twitter or even Google from some of these countries.

Even if you were to try and circumvent this block using a vpn…

Countries like China operate a firewall with a very powerful deep packet inspection technology (DPI) that strips your headers to detect vpn usage.

Once they detect vpn traffic they’ll either block you altogether or at least throttle your connection.

Is VyprVPN any match for China’s great firewall?

Since China’s firewall is particularly smart in detecting OpenVPN traffic, VyprVPN has their own proprietary connection protocol particularly for bypassing China’s firewall.

VyprVPN developed the ChameleonTM protocol that comes with all VyprVPN plans.

ChameleonTM protocol scrambles packet headers to make them undetectable as vpn traffic by the firewall.

As a result of scrambling your data, you’ll be able to avoid vpn blocking and throttling.

This way VyprVPN is able to “fool” China’s DPI technology that it’s normal https traffic so that it’s not detected.

So if you are looking for a vpn that you can carry with you to China or use to access Chinese tv channels then I recommend VyprVPN.

However, the ChameleonTM protocol does not work with the iOS app because of security restrictions in iOS.

VyprVPN is one of the few vpns that work in China.

How much does VyprVPN cost?

So what does VyprVPN cost?

How does VyprVPN pricing compete with the steep discounting other vpns provide?

First let me be honest and say I hated VyprVPN’s earlier pricing tiers where there used to be a standard and premium plan.

Hey… once I’m paying money I’m premium… What is it about this standard plan again?

But what worried me was especially the fact that standard users didn’t have unlimited bandwidth… which means they kept logs of my bandwidth usage… or something.

The good thing is that VyprVPN listened to customer feedback and scraped off these standard and premium plans and now offer just one pricing tier… premium.

Great.

Currently, VyprVPN offers 3 premium pricing plans:

1-month plan costs $12.95/month.

1-year plan costs $4.17/month, billed as $50.

2-year plan costs $2.71/month, billed as $65.

Now this is dirty cheap… but not as cheap as Ivacy which offers you all these, except just at a little slower speed.

All these VyprVPN plans come with 5 connected devices, unlimited bandwidth, ChameleonTM protocol and 30 money back guarantee.

Other vpns that deliver speeds to the class of VyprVPN charge much higher, so I think VyprVPN pricing is great.

Payment options?

What payment options does VyprVPN provide?

While some vpns go out of their way to provide anonymous payment methods, VyprVPN only sticks to payments methods that are identifiable.

So there is nothing to marvel about here.

At the time I was writing this VyprVPN review, they supported all credit cards, PayPal and Alipay.

No cryptocurrencies… no bitcoins.

Too bad if you want to keep anonymity with bitcoins… in which case I suggest you check out NordVPN.

But a good number of people don’t use crypto anyway, so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Does VyprVPN offer refunds?

Most vpn refund policies are rather vague.

While most will mention days like 30 day money back guarantee… the devil is in the details of the refund policy.

And because most people don’t read these policies anyway, they come to terms with the reality when they ask for a refund.

Refunds and money back guarantee is an area VyprVPN has been very shaky about.

Initially, they came out clear and said they don’t offer any refunds because they offered a free 3 day trial of VyprVPN.

While a money back guarantee usually makes me more confident when buying something online, in an industry like vpns where refunds have a lot of catches… you might as well just tell me there is no refund upfront so that I go in knowing.

Later, they changed and now offer a 30 day money back guarantee.

I didn’t test this refund policy myself but considering VyprVPN stopped logging user data for the first 30 days to help with refunds… I think it’s now a no-questions-asked money back guarantee.

I’ll do more research about this refund and provide updates here.

Does VyprVPN have a free trial?

Finding a vpn that is straightforward about the free trial is hard.

If you read most reviews you’ll see that a vpn offers a 7 day free trial but when you go to their websites the trial link is not conspicuously displayed on the homepage.

It takes some detective work to find out these links.

So does VyprVPN offer a free trial?

Luckily VyprVPN offers a free trial for 3 days… so you get to try all the premium features that VyprVPN offers free for 3 days before you decide to buy.

In fact, it used to be that since VyprVPN offered free 3 day trials, they offered no refunds after purchase.

After getting feedback from users, though, they decided to introduce a 30 money back guarantee to the paid plans.

So now, you get both a free 3 day trial and 30 days money back guarantee if you buy.

How many devices does VyprVPN support?

What about the devices that you can use with VyprVPN…

How many devices does VyprVPN support?

First, let me underscore that VyprVPN is one of the few vpns that support a huge array of devices.

VyprVPN comes with dedicated apps for Windows, Mac, Android and iOS, together with a configuration guide for Linux… There is no app for Linux.

You’ll also get apps for other popular platforms like QNAP, Blackphone, Smart TVs like Android TV, Anonabox and Blackberry.

In addition to that, VyprVPN supports a variety of routers and their support website has a lot of configuration guides.

Unfortunately, there are no browser plugins for Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

So if you are looking for a vpn that has plugins just for your browser, then I don’t recommend VyprVPN.

So how many devices can you connect at the same time?

While writing this VyprVPN review I can confirm that you can connect upto 5 devices using a single VyprVPN subscription at the same time.

I tested this by connecting two smartphones, my notebook, smart tv and Ubuntu desktop and all were able to access the internet with different IPs.

Even though I’d consider 5 devices average because some vpns offer 10 connections, it still gives you a couple options.

If you want to connect upto 10 devices using the same subscription, I suggest you check out other vpns.

Does VyprVPN offer live chat support?

Customer support is an area where most vpn providers skimp on.

After making great claims of what their vpn can do, most vpns go silent and become unreachable… except through email after hours of waiting.

How does VyprVPN customer support complete?

First, there are a lot of articles and guides on the VyprVPN support website that help you with most of the installation issues.

I find the guide to be rather simple and easy to follow.

However, there are times when it would be easier to just get a quick answer from a real person through instant live chat.

So that begs the question… does VyprVPN support live chat?

The answer is YES. While writing this VyprVPN review in 2021 I can confirm that VyprVPN actually offers live chat support on their website.

The button for launching the live chat is very conspicuous on the bottom right corner of the website.

After launching the chat I was able to get someone chatting with me in under 5 minutes.

Apart from live chat support VyprVPN also offers support through ticketing via the contact form on their website.

If you are particularly looking for a vpn that provides live chat support, I recommend VyprVPN for you.

In conclusion

Honestly, I am very skeptical about connection speed claims that vpns make.

This is because after testing dozens of vpns, I realized that most vpns don’t tell the truth about their speeds… it’s just a marketing gimmick.

When it comes to torrenting, VyprVPN changed their policy to explicitly allow torrenting activities.

And since you are anonymous with VyprVPN, there’s nothing to worry about while torrenting.

One downside of VyprVPN when it comes to streaming is that it only unblocks Netflix in the US but fails in other countries like Germany.

While Netflix US is what most people want because it has the largest collection of shows, some people might want to unblock Netflix in other countries like Brazil, Japan and the UK.

To be fair, though, considering most vpns struggle to even unblock Netflix in the first place, VyprVPN does great.

Remember you can also unblock other streaming platforms like Hulu and Amazon Prime Video in the US, as well as iPlayer, Eurosport and iTV in the UK.

Would I recommend VyprVPN in 2021?

YES.

If you want to torrent safely, unblock Netflix in the US and stream at great speeds, I recommend VyprVPN for you.
